Music and studying 3 Music and Studying Affects on studying Music becomes increasingly important in adolescent years with most teenagers averaging around 3 hours of listening to music a day. Teenagers use music to satisfy their emotional needs and portray the world around them. Studies have shown that studying at home has been accompanied by music or TV in the background (Kotsopoulou 1997; Patton, Stinard, and Routh 1983). Research on certain effects on playing music while studying shows very little significant differences between middle school, high school, and college students on whether listening to music helps them concentrate, gets rid of boredom, keeps them company, and helps them learn faster. It also shows that listening to music can interfere with studying. For instance if they sang along or developed to high of an arousal it would then become a distraction. University students showed that music had a more relaxing effect but was also more distracting then in younger students. This could mean the music choices they were listening to were increasing meta-cognitive awareness in older ages. Students at a younger age had the most positive response to fast pace tempo. While university students had a negative response to fast pace tempo. Chief Seattle, in his masterfully worded speech to Governor Isaac l. Stevens, attempts to convince Stevens people to treat his people kindly and fairly. At the same time, Seattle warns Stevens about the many negative aspects of his tribe. Chief Seattle offers a different perspective n his tribes relationship with the Americans than before. If Seattle could relay his message to Governor Stevens with one strategy, it would be his undeniable use of personification. Seattle begins his speech by saying that the sky has wept tears or compassion upon my people for centuries.Seattle saw to it that he start off his speech with a touch of sympathy for his tribe, which has obviously suffered enough to make the sky cry for them. Therefore, Governor Stevens would immediately feel sympathy for Seattle and his tribe and treat them kindly as a result. The sympathetic tone with which Seattle carries the first sentence also carries on for the remainder of the speech, thus always reminding Governor Stevens to approach them with kindness and fairness. Steven also uses personification to characterize the dead, whether they were from America or his tribe.Seattle states that his tribes dead often return to visit, guide, console, and comfort the lonely hearted living. Seattle suggests that his tribes dead are not powerless, and that the Americans cant Just treat them unjustly the dead are the same as the people, and thus need to be treated with kindness and fairness.
